The ceremony in Grand Bassa County on Friday marked the official start of the Special Economic Free Zone project, funded by a US$19 million investment from the African Development Bank. The initiative will develop 200 hectares of land to attract investors and boost agricultural activities.

Speaking on behalf of President Joseph Boakai, Vice President Koung said the project represented a significant step toward modernizing Liberiaโ€™s farming sector. Labour Minister Cooper Kruah and other senior government officials attended the groundbreaking ceremony alongside local representatives and traditional leaders.

The Liberia Special Agro-Industrial Processing Zone aims to move the countryโ€™s agricultural sector toward industrialization while creating sustainable jobs for local communities. Officials say the project will attract investors to build factories and processing facilities that will add value to locally grown crops.

Grand Bassa County lawmakers, including Representatives Thomas Alexander Goshua, Matthew Fairplay Joe, Clarence Banks and Alfred Flomo, praised President Boakaiโ€™s commitment to rural development. Acting County Superintendent James Duen said the project would provide lasting opportunities for residents who have long struggled with limited employment options.

The government views agricultural transformation as central to Liberiaโ€™s economic recovery, with officials describing farming as โ€œthe heartbeatโ€ of the Presidentโ€™s development agenda. The project is expected to begin attracting investors within the coming months as infrastructure development gets underway.
