OWECL in Lofa County

BEYAN TOWN, Lofa County -In continuation of its nationwide outreach initiative, the National Outreach Team of the Office for the Establishment of War and Economic Crimes Court for Liberia (๐Ž๐–๐„๐‚๐‚-๐‹) today arrived in Lofa County to consult with local stakeholders and community leaders on the proposed establishment of a Special War and Economic Crimes Court and a National Anti-Corruption Court.

Upon arrival in Beyan Town, District #5, the delegation was warmly received by locals leaders,  Police Authorities signed in Lofa, and subsequently joined by Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Thomas P. Fallah.

The visit provided an interactive platform for county officials and citizens to share perspectives on transitional justice, accountability, and rule of law.

Rev. Adolphus B. B. Capehart, leading the Outreach Team, reaffirmed the Officeโ€™s commitment to ensuring justice, accountability, and national reconciliation through inclusive consultations. He emphasized that citizen input is central to designing a justice mechanism that reflects the aspirations of all Liberians.

โ€œWe are here not only to inform but to listen. The voices of Lofa County citizens will help shape the processes that lead to the full establishment of our courts,โ€ Rev. Capehart stated.

He highlighted the Officeโ€™s responsibility to translate the Truth and Reconciliation Commissionโ€™s recommendations into tangible accountability mechanisms through democratic engagement.

In his address, Deputy Speaker Thomas P. Fallah pledged his support for the establishment of the courts, underscoring that Liberiaโ€™s peace and stability hinge on justice and accountability.

โ€œOur nation, once known as a sweet land of liberty, suffered greatly during the civil crisis. It is only right that those responsible for heinous acts are held to account,โ€ he said, adding that he is prepared to support relevant legislation when presented on the floor of the House.

๐Ž๐–๐„๐‚๐‚-๐‹ was established by President Joseph Boakai in May 2024 through Executive Order No. 131, which was renewed under Executive Order No. 148 in April 2025. The Office is mandated to develop the framework for both a War and Economic Crimes Court and a National Anti-Corruption Court, addressing crimes committed between 1979 and 2003, and corruption up to the present day.

Since it’s establishment, outreach activities have been conducted in 10 of Liberiaโ€™s 15 counties, with Lofa County being among the latest to engage in consultative discussions designed to deepen public understanding and get feedback from citizens.
