
UN Hqs β Forestry Development Authority (FDA) Managing Director, Hon. Rudolf J. Merab delivered a statement at the Twentieth Session of the United Nations Forum on Forest (UNFF20), held on Tuesday, May 6, 2025, at the Headquarters of the United Nations in Manhattan, New York.
Delivering his statement, Merab reminded the audience that Liberia is privileged to host the largest remaining portion of the Upper Guinean Rainforest, a globally significant biodiversity hotspot.
He highlighted Liberiaβs responsibility to steward these forests for national benefits as well as for regional and global ecological stability.
The FDA head informed the world body that Liberia has officially established five protected areas, with two more currently being gazetted and an additional four earmarked for future protection.
The FDA Managing Director concluded by stating that Liberia has set a national target to reforest 200 hectares annually, contributing directly to climate mitigation and ecosystem resilience.
