
MONROVIA โ The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Richard Nagbe Koon, has extended warmest congratulations to the Government and People of Liberia following the countryโs historic election today as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the 2026โ2027 term.
The election took place on Tuesday, June 3, 2025, at the UN Headquarters in New York, with Liberia securing its place among nations charged with maintaining international peace and security.

In a post-election statement, Speaker Koon expressed profound appreciation to H.E. Sara Beysolow Nyanti, Minister of Foreign Affairs, for her exemplary leadership throughout the campaign, as well as to Liberian diplomats around the world and the Committees on Foreign Affairs of the Legislature for their vigorous and united efforts in securing the seat.
โThis election is not just a victory for Liberiaโit is a triumph for African leadership, post-conflict recovery, and a renewed global confidence in our democratic path and diplomatic strength,โ the Speaker said.
He noted that Liberiaโs presence on the Security Council will enhance the countryโs global voice, allow it to advocate more effectively for peace and security, particularly in West Africa, and contribute meaningful perspectives shaped by Liberiaโs history and commitment to peacebuilding.

Speaker Koon reaffirmed the full support of the House of Representatives in all necessary legislative engagements aimed at ensuring Liberia makes the most of this important diplomatic platform.
Foreign Ministry Holds Open Watch Party
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs hosted an Open Watch Party of the voting proceedings at the United Nations Security Council Non-permanent seat for term 2026โ2027. A few hundreds of Liberians and foreigners attended the party at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Tuesday, June 3rd.

The event took place in the C. Cecil Dennis Auditorium at the Ministry. The special occasion was organized to allow members of the public, the diplomatic corps, international partners, and present and former government officials to witness a significant democratic process through a live broadcast of the voting proceedings.
The Ministry welcomed all interested stakeholders to attend and participate in what is expected to be a meaningful moment for national and international observers alike.

The event underscored the governmentโs commitment to transparency, civic engagement, and the strengthening of democratic institutions.
