Turkish Airlines will begin direct flight to Liberia in May 2026

-As Liberia Reclaims Global Aviation Links

MONROVIA, Liberia — Turkish Airlines has announced plans to commence direct commercial flights linking Istanbul, Accra, and Monrovia beginning May 11, 2026, marking a major milestone in Liberia’s re-engagement with international aviation and global commerce.

According to an official Turkish Airlines production planning schedule circulated this week, the Istanbul–Accra–Monrovia–Accra–Istanbul route will operate twice weekly, providing Liberia with one of its most significant international air connections in decades. The flights will be operated under flight numbers TK 627 and TK 628, with scheduled stops in Accra before arriving at Roberts International Airport (ROB).

The development is being widely welcomed as a boost for trade, tourism, investment, and diaspora connectivity, particularly as Liberia continues efforts to restore investor confidence and expand international access following years of limited global air service.

President Joseph Nyuma Boakai confirmed the airline’s interest during his national radio appearance on Friday, Decembe19, 2025, on the state broadcaster ELBC/LBS, describing the return of major international carriers as a sign of renewed confidence in Liberia.

“It took 40 years for international airlines to come back. They all were leaving. Today, the Turkish Airlines is talking about coming,” President Boakai told journalists, adding that such developments require patience and sustained reforms.

The President emphasized that large-scale investments, including aviation partnerships, are the result of rebuilding credibility and stability rather than short-term political gains.

“Some of these things take time. They can’t do it in 10 or 15 months. But the big jobs are coming,” he said.

Turkish Airlines, a member of the Star Alliance and one of the world’s most expansive global carriers, connects over 300 destinations worldwide. Its planned entry into the Liberian market is expected to significantly enhance Liberia’s visibility as a destination for business, tourism, and transit within West Africa.

Aviation and economic analysts note that the route could reduce travel time for passengers flying between Liberia, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East, while also strengthening trade logistics and cargo movement through Accra and Istanbul.

President Boakai linked the airline’s planned launch to broader infrastructure and economic reforms under his administration, including improvements in roads, ports, and international partnerships.

“You cannot create big jobs in a country that people do not have confidence in,” the President said. “For the bigger jobs, you need international funding, and those things take time.”

The new route is also expected to benefit Liberia’s large diaspora community, many of whom currently rely on multi-stop connections through Europe or other West African hubs.

While Turkish Airlines has not yet announced ticket sales or cargo arrangements, the May 2026 launch timeline signals what officials describe as growing momentum toward restoring Liberia’s place on the global aviation map.

If implemented as scheduled, the Istanbul–Monrovia service would represent one of the most significant international aviation developments in Liberia since the end of the civil conflict, reinforcing the government’s message that Liberia is once again open for business and global engagement.
