NEW DELHI, India — The Government of India has reaffirmed its full diplomatic support to Liberia as the West African nation prepares to assume its seat as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), following the successful conclusion of the first-ever India–Liberia United Nations Consultations held in New Delhi.
A high-level three-member Liberian delegation, led by Cllr. Jeddi Mowbray Armah, Deputy Minister for Legal Affairs at Liberia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, held extensive engagements with senior officials of India’s Ministry of External Affairs as part of the historic consultations. The dialogue marked a significant milestone in deepening bilateral and multilateral cooperation between the two countries.
The Liberian delegation was received by Ambassador Sibi George, Secretary (West), and Mr. Sevala Naik Mude, Additional Secretary (Central & West Africa), both of whom congratulated Liberia on its election to the UN Security Council and assured the Government of Liberia of India’s unwavering support throughout its tenure on the Council.
“The consultations provided a valuable platform for exchanging views on international peace and security, multilateral cooperation, and coordination at the United Nations, particularly during Liberia’s upcoming UNSC membership,” diplomatic sources said following the meetings.

On the Indian side, the consultations were led by Ms. Nabanita Chakrabarti, Joint Secretary in charge of the United Nations Political (UNP) Division at India’s Ministry of External Affairs. Discussions focused on global peacekeeping priorities, conflict prevention, and strengthening coordination between New Delhi and Monrovia within the UN system.
Beyond multilateral issues, the two sides also explored avenues to expand bilateral cooperation in critical development sectors. Talks with Additional Secretary Mude highlighted opportunities in healthcare delivery, maritime cooperation, agriculture, education, training, and institutional capacity building, areas seen as central to Liberia’s development agenda and India’s South-South cooperation framework.

India further reiterated its commitment to supporting Liberia through technical assistance and training programs, including opportunities under the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) Program, which has benefited many Liberian professionals over the years.
Liberia’s delegation included Mr. Garmondeh M. Yebleh, Desk Officer for International Peace and Security, and Mr. Moibah K. Johnson, Senior Desk Officer at the Bureau of Afro-Asian Affairs, underscoring the strategic importance Monrovia places on strengthening ties with India as it elevates its global diplomatic profile.
India and Liberia share long-standing friendly relations rooted in mutual respect, shared democratic values, and South-South cooperation, with collaboration spanning education, trade, capacity building, and people-to-people exchanges.
The successful conclusion of the maiden India–Liberia UN Consultations signals a new phase of diplomatic engagement, positioning both countries to work more closely on global governance issues while reinforcing Liberia’s role as a responsible and constructive actor on the international stage during its historic UNSC tenure.
