MONROVIA – Liberia – The Dock Workers Union of Liberia has formally petitioned President Joseph Boakai to veto the controversial Ports Autonomy Bill, arguing that the proposed legislation is “counterproductive” to national development and poses significant risks to Liberia’s governance structure.
In a strong statement, the Union asserts that the bill lacks sufficient empirical data to justify its implementation and fails to account for the substantial operational and infrastructural costs inherent in modern port development.

The Union warns that the bill could set a “dangerous precedent” for Liberia’s unitary form of government, emphasizing that its potential risks far outweigh any perceived benefits.
The petition, delivered to Presidential Adviser Madam Macdella Cooper, highlights the Union’s concerns that the bill could undermine efficiency and accountability within the nation’s port systems.

Madam Cooper assured the delegation that the communication would be promptly forwarded to President Boakai for thorough review and consideration.
The Dock Workers Union’s appeal underscores a growing debate surrounding the future of Liberia’s port management and its potential impact on national stability and economic development.
