Monrovia – In celebration of Mother’s Day, the Office for the Establishment of War and Economic Crimes Court for Liberia (OWECC-L) hosted a program to honor and recognize the contributions of its female employees.
The initiative was spearheaded by the Executive Director, Dr. Cllr. Jallah A. Barbu, a firm advocate for gender equity.
Mother’s Day is celebrated annually on the second Sunday of May to pay special homage to mothers across the world for their valuable service in their respective homes and society.
OWECC-L’s event served not only as a tribute to the incredible women of the institution but also as a platform to reaffirm its commitment to women’s empowerment and rights protection. The celebration brought together the entire workforce in a show of unity and gratitude.
Dr. Barbu, accompanied by a team of male colleagues, took a hands-on role in demonstrating appreciation by personally serving breakfast and lunch to all the female staff. This symbolic gesture emphasized the spirit of respect and collaboration that the institution fosters.
Each woman was also awarded a certificate of appreciation—an acknowledgment of their dedication, professionalism, and the essential role they play at OWECC-L.
In response to the surprise, female employees—out of joy and excitement—expressed their appreciation for the thoughtful gesture from their male colleagues, stating that it has boosted their energy to work harder in achieving the office’s mandate.
Also commenting, Dr. Barbu underscored his dedication to gender sensitivity and the importance of creating an inclusive environment where women feel empowered and valued.
He assured the staff that OWECC-L remains steadfast in its promise to support women’s participation at all levels of the Court’s formation and operations, adding that women are not only contributors but also key architects in the journey toward justice and accountability in Liberia.
The celebration also highlighted the unique challenges faced by women in post-conflict reconstruction and transitional justice, particularly in institutions like OWECC-L.
