CAPITOL HILL, Monrovia — The House of Representatives of Liberia has launched a formal investigation into Montserrado County District #10 Representative Yekeh Kolubah over controversial statements regarding the Liberia–Guinea border dispute, which lawmakers say may have undermined national interest.
Plenary on Thursday mandated its Rules, Order and Administration Committee to probe allegations of misconduct against Rep. Kolubah, with a report expected before the close of the ongoing Special Session.
The decision follows separate complaints from Bong County Representative Sumo Mulbah and the Inspector General of the Liberia National Police, Gregory Coleman, who raised concerns over comments attributed to Kolubah about the disputed territory between Liberia and Guinea.
Security and Diplomatic Concerns
Inspector General Coleman warned that the lawmaker’s remarks could inflame tensions in already fragile border communities and complicate ongoing diplomatic engagements.
According to him, such statements risk creating uncertainty among residents and could potentially undermine national security efforts, particularly at a time when authorities are working to maintain peace and stability along the border.
Lawmakers echoed similar concerns, noting that public pronouncements by elected officials—especially on sensitive territorial matters—must reflect the official position of the Liberian government.
Controversial Statement Sparks Backlash
The controversy stems from remarks reportedly made by Rep. Kolubah following his return from Ghana, during which he allegedly claimed that the disputed land belongs to Guinea and that residents of Lofa County are aware of this.
The statement has since drawn sharp criticism within the Legislature, with some lawmakers arguing that it weakens Liberia’s negotiating position and undermines the country’s territorial integrity.
Speaker Calls for Cooperation
House Speaker Richard Nagbe Koon has urged Rep. Kolubah to cooperate fully with the investigation.
Sources within the Legislature say the probe will determine whether the lawmaker’s comments constitute misconduct or a breach of legislative ethics.
High-Stakes Inquiry
The investigation comes amid heightened sensitivity over the Liberia–Guinea border issue, particularly in parts of Lofa County where tensions have persisted.
Analysts say the outcome of the probe could have broader implications, not only for legislative discipline but also for how public officials engage on matters of national sovereignty.
For now, the House’s action signals a firm commitment to safeguarding Liberia’s territorial integrity and ensuring that statements by public officials do not compromise national unity or diplomatic efforts.
