
MONROVIA – Liberia on Monday, May 19, celebrated Day 1 of the International Day for Women in Maritime (IDWIM) as Women in Maritime of West and Central Africa (WIMOWCA) held a successful event in the slum community of West Point, down the waterfront in central Monrovia.
The event focused on raising awareness within the West Point community about illegal sand mining and the dumping of plastic waste in the ocean. This initiative was organized under the global theme “Our Ocean, Our Obligation, Our Opportunities.”

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) theme is “Our Ocean of Opportunities for Women,” while the national theme is “An Ocean of Opportunities for Liberian Women.”
Additionally, the IMO established May 18 as a special day to highlight women’s strength and significant contributions in the maritime sector, particularly regarding their developmental roles.
The IMO International Day for Women in Maritime is observed on 18 May every year.

The day celebrates women in the industry and is intended to promote the recruitment, retention and sustained employment of women in the maritime sector, raise the profile of women in maritime, strengthen IMO’s commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 5 (gender equality) and support work to address the current gender imbalance in maritime. IMO Member States, the maritime industry, and all others in the maritime endeavour joined to promote and celebrate the International Day for Women in Maritime.
