MONROVIA, LIBERIA — The newly established Liberian Institute of Tax Practitioners (LITP) has completed the validation and alignment of its bylaws, marking a major step toward the full operational rollout of the institution as Liberia’s official regulatory body for tax practitioners.

The milestone was reached following a one-day validation exercise involving tax professionals, financial experts, and legal practitioners aimed at ensuring that the institute’s governing bylaws are fully consistent with the Act establishing the body, which was officially passed into law in April 2026.

The LITP was created to strengthen tax administration, improve professional standards, and regulate tax practice across Liberia through training, licensing, and oversight mechanisms.

Speaking during the exercise, Acting Vice President Arthur Fumbah described the validation process as a critical foundation for the institution’s national operations.

“This exercise is very important because the institute is the legal regulatory body charged with implementing, overseeing training and licensing tax practitioners in Liberia,” Fumbah stated.

According to him, the institute is now transitioning toward its first leadership elections expected to be held in September this year.

He further disclosed that the LITP is preparing to host a delegation from the West Africa Union of Tax Institutes as part of efforts to establish regional collaboration and institutional partnerships.

Fumbah noted that the anticipated partnership could significantly contribute to standardizing tax practice in Liberia while strengthening compliance and improving domestic revenue mobilization.

“We are moving rapidly because we are preparing for the visitation from the West Africa Union of Tax Institutes, and the results from this exercise will be submitted to our governing council,” he explained.

Push for Professional Standards and Revenue Growth

The establishment of the Liberian Institute of Tax Practitioners is widely being viewed by financial and governance experts as an important development in Liberia’s efforts to modernize tax administration and strengthen accountability within the country’s revenue system.

The institution is expected to play a central role in setting professional standards for tax practitioners, promoting ethical conduct, enhancing compliance, and supporting broader domestic resource mobilization efforts.

Liberia continues facing major challenges in revenue generation and tax compliance, with government officials repeatedly emphasizing the need to improve tax administration as part of national economic recovery and development efforts.

Analysts believe the creation of a professional regulatory body for tax practitioners could help improve transparency, professionalism, and public confidence within Liberia’s financial governance framework.

Government Support and Expansion Plans

Fumbah praised legal experts and professionals who participated in the validation process and pledged continued collaboration to ensure that the institute develops a strong and credible operational structure.

He also encouraged tax practitioners across the country to actively participate in the upcoming elections and membership enrollment exercises.

“The success of this institution will depend on collective commitment from professionals in the sector,” he emphasized.

The Acting Vice President further revealed that the Government of Liberia has pledged full political support to the institution as it begins operations and prepares to expand activities into all fifteen counties.

“Government expects a lot from this institution,” Fumbah stated. “We can build one of the strongest professional bodies in Liberia if we remain committed and work hard for our people.”

The completion of the bylaws validation exercise now clears the way for the institute to accelerate implementation of its regulatory mandate and formal operational activities nationwide.
