MONROVIA, LIBERIA — In celebration of Mother’s Day, the National Fisheries and Aquaculture Authority (NaFAA) has launched “Mothers Lead,” a groundbreaking initiative aimed at recognizing and promoting the dedication, resilience, and leadership contributions of women within the institution.
As part of the celebration, NaFAA hosted a special luncheon honoring female staff and officially designated May 25–29, 2026, as “Mothers Lead Week,” during which women are temporarily assuming leadership of all departments within the Authority — including the Office of the Director General.
The initiative is intended to strengthen women’s leadership, professional development, mentorship, and workplace inclusion while highlighting the important role women continue to play in national development and Liberia’s fisheries and aquaculture sector.
According to NaFAA, the program provides women across various departments with hands-on leadership experience and greater exposure to decision-making responsibilities.
From senior technical professionals to administrative and support staff, female employees are being given the opportunity to step into leadership roles, demonstrate their capabilities, and inspire the next generation of women leaders within the institution and beyond.
“This temporary role is a pathfinder for permanent future opportunities,” one participant stated during the program.
Officials at the Authority described the initiative as a major step toward fostering gender equality and creating more opportunities for women to grow professionally within Liberia’s public sector.
The “Mothers Lead” initiative also reflects broader national and global conversations surrounding women’s empowerment, leadership representation, and workplace inclusion.
Women remain central to Liberia’s fisheries sector, particularly in fish processing, marketing, community fisheries activities, and coastal livelihoods, yet many advocates say more needs to be done to expand women’s representation in leadership and policy-making positions within the industry.
NaFAA reaffirmed its commitment to advancing gender inclusion, staff empowerment, and institutional leadership development across the fisheries and aquaculture sector.
The Authority emphasized that empowering women within public institutions contributes not only to workplace diversity but also to stronger governance, innovation, and national development outcomes.
The weeklong initiative is expected to feature leadership engagements, mentorship activities, and internal empowerment programs designed to encourage female participation in management and decision-making processes.
