BUCHANAN, Grand Bassa – Senate President Pro Tempore Nyonblee Karnga-Lawrence has lauded House Speaker Richard N. Koon and members of the House of Representatives for the passage of the Port Authority and Port Autonomy Bills, disclosing that Grand Bassa County is poised to attain “port city” status once the legislation is signed into law.

On Friday, June 12, 2026, Pro-Temp Karnga-Lawrence addressed citizens and residents during the Government Town Hall Legislative Forum in Buchanan, Grand Bassa County, where she described the bills as a critical step toward decentralization and economic transformation for the county.

“If signed by the President and operations start, we will see what decentralization is all about,” she told the gathering. “Grand Bassa will surely be a port city.”

The Government Town Hall Legislative Forum is a national decentralization initiative designed to bridge the gap between lawmakers and constituents. Held periodically in county capitals, the forum provides an opportunity for senior government officials to present updates on legislation, national policies, and development projects directly to citizens.

The platform also allows residents to raise concerns, ask questions, and propose priorities for legislative action.

Economic Zone to Spur Job Creation

The Pro-Tempore also announced that a special economic zone is expected to be awarded to a new company, a move she said will transform the county’s economic landscape and add value to agricultural products.

She noted that the zone is expected to strengthen Grand Bassa’s development agenda and create employment opportunities for residents.

“This will bring about transformation, which will add value to the county’s economic programs and create jobs for the citizenry,” Karnga-Lawrence stated.

LEC Grid to Reach Schools, Hospitals and Homes

Touching on energy, the Pro-Temp disclosed plans to expand the Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC) grid across the county. According to her, the expansion will gradually extend electricity services to schools, hospitals, businesses, public institutions, and private homes.

She added: “The expansion is part of broader efforts to improve service delivery and support business growth in Grand Bassa.”

Appeal for Collective Effort

Pro-Temp Karnga-Lawrence concluded her address with a call for unity and sustained citizen engagement. She urged residents to “keep pushing and collectively work together for the greater good of Grand Bassa County.”
