-Sinoe County Association in the Americas Confers Presidential Award of Appreciation on Veteran Community Leader Whose Work Has Helped Shape Liberia’s Dual Citizenship Reform and Strengthen Diaspora Unity
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Veteran Liberian community leader and diaspora advocate Emmanuel S. Wettee has received another major recognition for his decades of dedicated service after the Sinoe County Association in the Americas (SCAA) presented him with its prestigious Presidential Award of Appreciation during the association’s 27th Annual Convention and Reunion.
The award, presented on July 11, 2026, recognizes Wettee’s “unwavering dedication, exemplary leadership, and steadfast commitment” to the mission and vision of the association, while honoring what organizers described as his significant contributions to the growth, unity and success of the Sinoe County community in the United States.
According to the inscription on the plaque, the association commended Wettee’s integrity, selfless devotion and enduring service, noting that his leadership has inspired others and strengthened the bonds that unite the Liberian diaspora.
“Your outstanding service has significantly contributed to the growth, unity, and success of our organization. Through your hard work, integrity, and selfless devotion, you have inspired others and strengthened the bonds that unite our community,” the citation reads.
The award was signed by William Zack Russ, Chairman of the Board of SCAA, and Henry Sayon Johnson, National President, and formed one of the highlights of the association’s annual convention, which was held under the theme “One Sinoe, One Vision.”
The multi-day gathering brought together sons and daughters of Sinoe County from across the United States for business sessions, community dialogue, cultural activities, an inaugural ball and worship service, reaffirming the association’s commitment to strengthening unity among Liberians in the diaspora.
For many in attendance, honoring Wettee represented more than recognizing an individual—it celebrated a lifetime devoted to community leadership and national service.
Well known within Liberia and among Liberian communities abroad, Wettee has spent years advocating for stronger engagement between Liberia and its diaspora. As Eminent Chairman of the All-Liberian Conference on Dual Citizenship (ALCOD), he became one of the leading voices behind the campaign to reform Liberia’s dual citizenship law, consistently arguing that Liberians living abroad should be encouraged to contribute more fully to national development without being forced to sever legal ties with their adopted countries.
Throughout the years, he has remained a respected advocate for diaspora inclusion, civic participation and national unity, frequently calling for policies that harness the expertise, investments and professional experience of Liberians living overseas. His advocacy played an important role in keeping the dual citizenship conversation alive through successive administrations until the passage of landmark reforms.
Friends and colleagues say those who have worked alongside Wettee know him not only as a policy advocate but also as a mentor and consensus builder.
Among them is Alpha Tongar, who collaborated with Wettee for many years through ALCOD and regards him as one of the diaspora’s most dedicated community leaders. Tongar said Wettee’s recognition reflects years of quiet sacrifice, principled leadership and unwavering commitment to promoting the interests of Liberians at home and abroad.
Those who know Wettee say he has consistently placed service above personal recognition, choosing to work behind the scenes to build institutions, encourage dialogue and unite Liberians around common causes.
The SCAA recognition adds to a growing list of honors bestowed upon Wettee in recent years for his contributions to Liberia and the Liberian diaspora. Community organizations have previously celebrated his leadership in advancing dual citizenship, mentoring younger Liberians and strengthening civic engagement among Liberian communities in the United States.
Although visibly humbled by the honor, Wettee thanked the leadership and membership of the Sinoe County Association in the Americas for the recognition, describing it as both an encouragement and a reminder that meaningful leadership is measured by service to others.
For members of SCAA, however, the award was less about celebrating one moment than acknowledging a lifetime of commitment.
As the association gathered under the banner of “One Sinoe, One Vision,” its decision to honor Emmanuel S. Wettee served as a tribute to a man whose leadership has extended far beyond county lines—one whose enduring legacy continues to shape the Liberian diaspora and strengthen its connection to the homeland.
