MONROVIA, LIBERIA — The Bassa Stakeholders Group, a non-political organization comprising eminent citizens and professional experts from Grand Bassa County, has donated assorted sporting materials to the Bassa Sports Association (BSA) as an initial contribution toward the upcoming District League.
The donation, presented recently during a very brief ceremony in Monrovia, includes 12 sets of jerseys and 10 footballs valued at more than US$2,000. The materials are intended to support teams participating in the District League, which will serve as a talent-scouting platform ahead of the National County Sports Meet scheduled for November 2026.
As Prime Sponsor of the District League, the Bassa Stakeholders Group has also earmarked LD$130,000 in prize money for the winner and runners-up of the competition.
Speaking during the presentation, Moses Zangar, Jr., Acting Chairman of the Group’s Interim Sports Committee, said the contribution reflects the Stakeholders’ commitment to youth development and sports growth in the county.
“This support is aimed at promoting the development of home-grown talent and ensuring our young athletes have the necessary tools to compete and excel. The District League is the foundation for identifying the best players who will proudly represent Grand Bassa at the National County Sports”, Zangar added.
He added that the Bassa Stakeholders Group reaffirmed its commitment to partnering with community institutions to promote unity, talent development, and excellence in sports in Grand Bassa County.
Also, Nat Bayjay, Acting Chair on Press and Publicity used to presentation to urge the BSA to make sure smile returns to the football-loving Bassa citizens who had not have any football glory in National County Sports Meet for the past 10 years.
“This 2026 is exactly a decade since Grand Bassa, a footballing county, last won the football category of the Sports Meet. This is unacceptable. That’s why we the Bassa Stakeholders are very intentional with such support that will extend to the County Teams themselves when the Sports Meet resumes in November”, Bayjay added.
Receiving the items on behalf of the BSA, Secretary-General Stanley Trokon Horace expressed the BSA’s profound gratitude for the donated items. Horace promised that the BSA will evenly distribute the items amongst the participating districts.
Already, the BSA has subsequently turned over the donated jerseys and footballs to the six participating districts. The turning over ceremony recently took place at the Doris Williams Sports Stadium in Buchanan.The 2026 Grand Bassa County District which was expected to kick-off in Buchanan at the Doris Williams Stadium from September 6 to 13, has been postponed to later date until after the burial of the former Superintendent of the county, the late Janjay Baikpeh. The intensive week-long contest featuring both football and kickball categories includes Electoral District #1 Diahnblae, Electoral District #2 Glakon, Electoral District #3 Buchanan, Electoral District #4 , Electoral District #5 Wee, Electoral District #5 Kpogba, and Electoral District #6 Neekreen.
