WAHASALA, LOFA COUNTY – In a significant step towards enhancing agricultural practices and ensuring food security in Liberia, the Ministry of Agriculture has successfully constructed and dedicated the $650,000 Fangoda Irrigation Dam in the Wahasala Administrative District of Lofa County. This project aims to revitalize farming in the region and is aligned with President Joseph Boakai’s strategic initiative to boost local food production while reducing the country’s reliance on imported rice.

The irrigation dam covers an impressive 775 acres, which has been designated for year-round agricultural production, targeting especially the cultivation of rice, a staple food in Liberia. Agriculture Minister Dr. J. Alexander Nuetah highlighted the vital role of agriculture as a pathway to wealth creation during the dedication ceremony. He strongly encouraged the participation of the youth in agricultural practices, underscoring the sector’s potential to generate jobs and improve livelihoods.
“Our goal is to restore Lofa County’s reputation as Liberia’s ‘food basket.’ By expanding rice cultivation and creating employment opportunities for our young people and students, we can foster sustainable development and food security,” Minister Nuetah emphasized.
Community leaders have expressed their enthusiastic support for the project, acknowledging its importance in fostering local agriculture and enhancing food production capabilities. They have also urged the government to provide ongoing assistance to farmers in the region to ensure the success of this initiative.

In addition to the dam’s dedication, Minister Nuetah took the opportunity to inspect other agricultural development sites in Foya and its surrounding areas, further assessing opportunities for enhancing agricultural productivity throughout the region.
The Fangoda Irrigation Dam represents a pivotal investment in the future of Lofa County and Liberia as a whole. As the government prioritizes support for agriculture, there is hope that this project will not only bolster local food production but also revitalize the rural economy and improve the livelihoods of countless families.
