As the Liberia Football Association (LFA) Lower Women’s League concludes on Sunday, June 22, 2025, at the Tusa Field Sports Pitch, a cloud of controversy has emerged following the LFA’s introduction of a playoff format to end the season.

According to the Montserrado Sub-Association, five teams from Montserrado County and three teams from Nimba County will participate in a playoff to determine final standings and possible promotion.

However, several club stakeholders and team presidents have strongly criticized the decision, labeling it abrupt, un-consulted, and unfair.

“This is the first time such a system has been implemented in the Lower Women’s League,” said one club president, speaking anonymously. “There’s no clear explanation for this sudden playoff decision. We’ve never had it before, and implementing it now raises serious concerns.”

Stakeholders argue that the change was introduced without proper consultation or communication with the teams involved.

Many believe this violates principles of transparency and undermines the competitive integrity of the league.

“There was no prior engagement with the clubs,” said another team executive.

“This format was imposed, and it creates unnecessary confusion. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗮 𝗳𝘂𝗹𝗹 𝘀𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘀  𝗱𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗮 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘆𝗼𝗳𝗳?”

The Liberia Football Association has yet to officially address these concerns, but the situation highlights broader issues of governance and fairness within women’s football in the country.

𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗮 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲, 𝗮 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘆𝗼𝗳𝗳 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗯𝗲 𝗮 𝘂𝘀𝗲𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝘁𝗼𝗼𝗹 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝗼𝗻𝗹𝘆 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘂𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗽𝘂𝗿𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗲, 𝘀𝘂𝗰𝗵 𝗮𝘀 𝗱𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗹𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗿 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗴𝘂𝗲. What complicates matters now is that several teams have already earned promotion based on their league performance, including Republic FC, LEAD MFA, and potentially either Small Town or Falconets, depending on Sunday’s results.

𝗪𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗯𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗱? 𝗜𝗳 𝘆𝗲𝘀, 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘆𝗼𝗳𝗳𝗳 𝘀𝗲𝗲𝗺𝘀 𝘂𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘂𝗻𝗳𝗮𝗶𝗿 𝘁𝗼 𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗹𝘂𝗯𝘀.

𝗜𝗳 𝗻𝗼, 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘄𝗵𝘆 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝘂𝗹𝗹 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗴𝘂𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘆𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗹𝗹?

Many believe the LFA owes clubs, players, and fans a clear explanation. As things stand, the uncertainty is casting a shadow over what should be a moment of celebration and achievement for women’s football in Liberia.
