Capitol Building in where Liberia sits

MONROVIA – Beginning Tuesday, June 24, 2025, all plenary sessions of the House of Representatives (HoR) will include the presence of sign language interpreters. This landmark initiative, under the leadership of House Speaker Richard Nagbe Koon, reflects the Speaker’s commitment to inclusive governance and transparency in legislative proceedings.

The move is part of a broader reform agenda designed to ensure that no citizen is left behind, particularly members of the deaf and hard-of-hearing community. Speaker Koon emphasized that enabling every Liberian to follow the deliberations of their elected representatives is fundamental to democratic participation.

โ€œThe deaf and hard-of-hearing population also deserves to know what their lawmakers are discussing in the interest of the Republic of Liberia and its people,โ€ stated Robert Benjamin Haynes, Director of Press at the House of Representatives. โ€œThis is a historic step toward fostering accessibility and inclusiveness in our national discourse.โ€

The sign language interpreters will be stationed within the House Chamber during all plenary sessions to provide real-time interpretation of legislative discussions, debates, and decisions.

This effort signals a new chapter in legislative openness, as the House continues to strengthen its engagement with all citizens through meaningful reforms.
