MONROVIA – In a move at enhancing local governance and economic development, Mustapha Waritay, the representative for Electoral District #3 in Gbarpolu County, has submitted a bill to establish the city of Gbarma, along with the townships of Weasua and Kungbor, during a session of the legislative body.
The proposed bills come in response to the provisions outlined in the Local Government Act of 2018, which provides a legal framework for decentralization and local governance in Liberia.
This act facilitates the establishment of cities and townships, enabling local areas to function more autonomously and efficiently.
Representative Waritay emphasized that Gbarma, Weasua, and Kungbor are densely populated regions with the necessary infrastructure and resources to qualify for city and township status.
He argued that official recognition as a city and townships would not only enhance governance but also spur economic activities and create much-needed employment opportunities for local residents.
In his appeal to his fellow lawmakers, Waritay expressed gratitude for their professionalism and urged them to consider the importance of these developments for Gbarpolu County.
He noted that the establishment of these new administrative units would play a critical role in improving the quality of life for the citizens and enhancing service delivery at the local level.
As discussions around the bills unfold, representatives will deliberate on the potential impacts of such establishment on the region’s socio-economic landscape, with the hope of a positive outcome that aligns with the aspirations of Gbarpolu County’s residents.
