Muslim women protesting before headquarters of the Liberia National Police

MONROVIA – In a powerful display of solidarity and resolve, hundreds of predominantly Muslim women marched to the Liberia National Police (LNP) Headquarters in Monrovia to demand justice for a fellow community member.

The protest was ignited by the circulation of a distressing video that captured a police officer violently confronting a Muslim woman, accused of electricity theft.

The footage, which quickly went viral, sparked outrage within the community and beyond, as many perceived the incident as emblematic of deeper issues related to police brutality and the treatment of marginalized groups.

The women, wearing traditional attire and carrying placards, united in their calls for accountability, justice, and reforms within the police force.

Speakers at the protest emphasized the need for fair treatment and respect for rights, particularly for women who often bear the brunt of police actions.

They demanded that the LNP conduct an impartial investigation into the incident and hold the officer involved accountable for his actions. Many participants highlighted the broader implications of the incident, linking it to systemic issues of violence against women and the lack of proper protocols in handling such situations.

Community leaders and activists joined the protest, amplifying the calls for justice and urging for a dialogue between the LNP and the community to address concerns over police conduct and accountability.

The protest concluded with a commitment to continue advocating for justice and reform, with organizers promising to escalate their efforts until meaningful changes are enacted. As the movement grows, many are hopeful that the momentum will lead to greater awareness of the issues faced by women in Liberia and a commitment from authorities to protect the rights and dignity of all citizens.
