Criminal Court A Judge Roosevelt Z. Willie

By Jacqueline Dennis

In light of the high requirements for human sureties in the alleged arson case at the Capitol Building, Judge Roosevelt Z. Willie of Criminal Court “A” has increased the demand on the defendants’ sureties from two to four.

Judge Willie has mandated four sureties for each defendant, among other requirements. This unexpected escalation has raised questions among the community and legal professionals.

Lawyers representing the defendants—John Nyanti, Christian Koffa, and others—have secured their clients’ release by submitting a bond of 6 million.

The restrictions imposed by Judge Willie have been met with dismay from legal representatives, who argue that the new requirements for the defendants are excessively high.

Former House Speaker Koffa (above) and his colleagues are standing trial for their alleged involvement in the Capitol Building arson case

However, since their arrest, the defendants have consistently maintained their innocence, asserting that they were not involved in the alleged burning of a portion of the Joint Chamber at the Capitol Building in December 2024.

The burden of proof rests with the prosecution to prove its case beyond all reasonable doubt, while the defense team awaits clarity on the evidence that is expected to justify the prosecution’s claims.

The case is expected to be placed on the docket for this August Term of court, and all eyes are now on the judiciary for a transparent hearing.
