MONROVIA – In observance of World Clean-Up Day 2025, the Monrovia City Corporation (MCC), under Mayor John-Charuk Siafa, joined forces with French shipping company CMA CGM to conduct a large-scale clean-up along the Mesurado Riverfront. The initiative successfully removed tons of waste and pollutants from the river, mobilizing community members and volunteers in a shared effort to promote environmental sustainability.
A significant number of volunteers from the Slipway Community actively participated, clearing litter and debris from the riverbanks and shallow river areas.

Mayor Siafa highlighted the importance of World Clean-Up Day as a reminder of collective responsibility. “This year’s theme underscores the importance of collective action. It is not the work of government alone; it is the responsibility of all of us—market women, students, community leaders, youth groups, businesses, development partners, and every household. Clean cities are not only healthier and safer; they are also more prosperous, more attractive for investment, and more resilient to climate impacts,” he said.
The Mayor acknowledged that Monrovia, like many global cities, faces persistent challenges with waste management, plastic pollution, and climate change. He reaffirmed MCC’s commitment to key objectives, including:
- Strengthening community-based waste management systems: Encouraging local participation in sustainable waste practices.
- Expanding public-private partnerships: Creating employment opportunities, particularly for women and youth.
- Promoting recycling and green innovation: Integrating environmentally friendly practices into urban development.
- Ensuring daily cleanliness: Building a culture where tidiness is a routine, not occasional, activity for all Monrovians.

Mayor Siafa called on residents to take ownership of their environment, stressing that even small actions—picking up a plastic bottle, sweeping streets, planting trees—can collectively contribute to a cleaner and safer city. “Let us work hand in hand to make Monrovia a shining example of environmental stewardship and civic pride, not just today, but every day,” he urged.
Madam Harriet Wandira, Managing Director of CMA CGM, echoed the Mayor’s message, emphasizing her company’s commitment to environmental sustainability. She also warned of the long-term consequences of illegal waste disposal and encouraged residents to adopt responsible habits to protect future generations. The collaborative clean-up underscores the importance of government, private sector, and community engagement in tackling environmental challenges and fostering a greener, healthier Monrovia.
