Like the Fire service team, police, too, alarmed that they were denied access to the former President's home in Sinkor

MONROVIA – The Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) has strongly condemned the recent fire at the residence of former President George Manneh Weah, calling it a “premeditated attack” on his life and a threat to national peace.

In a statement, the party described the incident as a deliberate attempt to undermine the safety of Liberia’s former head of state and to destabilize the country’s democratic fabric.

“We regard this unfortunate incident as a premeditated attack on his life, intended to undermine his safety and destabilize the peace of our nation,” the CDC said.

Former President Weah returned to the country on Monday

Background of Targeted Incidents

The CDC’s statement referenced previous instances where former President Weah and his supporters faced intimidation. During one of his returns to Liberia, violence erupted at Roberts International Airport (RIA) when personnel of the Armed Forces of Liberia (AFL) reportedly attacked CDC partisans. On a recent visit, armed police officers allegedly manhandled supporters, placing some in handcuffs and detaining others.

The fire incident itself drew community intervention, echoing the bravery seen in prior emergencies, when neighbors rushed to help extinguish flames that gutted parts of the former President’s residence. The CDC called attention to this as evidence of the ongoing threats faced by political leaders in Liberia.

Disinformation Campaign

The CDC also accused members of the Unity Party (UP) of spreading disinformation, including the circulation of a fake, AI-generated image falsely claimed to depict Weah’s bedroom.

“Such acts are not only deceptive but are calculated attempts to mislead the public and tarnish the image of our Political Leader,” the CDC said.

Call for Justice

While reassuring the public that former President Weah is safe and in good health, the CDC demanded a forensic, independent, and international investigation into the fire. The party stressed that the probe should be free from lies and manipulation to ensure truth and accountability prevail. The CDC concluded by reaffirming its commitment to Liberia’s peace, unity, and democracy, warning against reckless actions and urging all actors to respect human life, democratic principles, and the rule of law.
