In a major stride toward promoting inclusive education and social reintegration, the Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection, through its Department of Children, has signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with a coalition of school principals across Montserrado County. The agreement seeks to strengthen collaboration between the government and academic institutions under the Street Child Project, a flagship initiative aimed at providing education opportunities for former street children.

The signing ceremony, held at the Ministry’s headquarters recently, brought together key stakeholders from the education and child protection sectors. The MoU outlines a shared commitment to support the identification, enrollment, and retention of children who have been living in street situations, many of whom have long been excluded from formal education.

Speaking at the event, Deputy Minister for Children and Social Protection, Hon. Garmai Tokpah emphasized the significance of the agreement. “This partnership represents a critical step forward in our collective responsibility to ensure that no child is left behind. Education is a fundamental right, and with this MoU, we are creating a clear path for vulnerable children to access learning, stability, and long-term development.”

Under the terms of the agreement, participating schools will work closely with the Ministry to streamline enrollment processes, provide psychosocial support, and monitor academic progress. In return, the Ministry will offer technical support, facilitate referrals, and work with partners to mobilize resources that enhance school readiness and retention for the targeted children.

The principals welcomed the initiative, stating: “We are proud to be part of this transformative effort. These children deserve a second chance, and through this partnership, we are helping shape a future where they can thrive, learn, and contribute meaningfully to society.”

The Street Child Project is part of the Ministry’s broader child protection strategy, which focuses on redeeming the future of children living in street situations by providing reintegration and empowerment support. With the MoU now in effect, the Ministry and its education partners hope to solidify the enrolment of more kids.

This MoU symbolizes more than just institutional cooperation, it reflects a shared vision of equity, dignity, and opportunity for all children, regardless of their past circumstances.
