MONROVIA – In a show of unity and commitment to justice and accountability, Liberia’s tribal governors have declared their unwavering support for the establishment of the War and Economic Crimes Court and the National Anti-Corruption Court.
This declaration marks a pivotal moment in Liberia’s pursuit of accountability, reconciliation, and good governance, with the involvement of local communities.
Speaking at a meeting with OWECC-L Executive Director Dr. Cllr. Jallah A. Barbu, the Deputy National President, who also serves as Kpelleh Governor, expressed happiness to be part of a process that seeks not only to heal Liberia but also to promote justice and fight impunity.
The governors emphasized the urgent need to address the atrocities committed during Liberia’s civil conflicts and the systemic corruption in public service, expressing frustration over the prolonged delay in bringing justice not only to the accused but also to the communities affected by their actions. “We stand firmly with the Liberian government and with you, Dr. Barbu, in the fight against impunity,’ said Madam Theresa Wylie, a member of the delegation and the Sapo Governor.
Briefing the tribal governors earlier, Dr Barbu assured them of a process that will address their concerns as mandated through Executive Order 148 issued by President Joseph Nyumanh Boakai, Sr.
To fully get the governors involved, the OWECC-L Executive Director also informed the tribal governors that the OWECC_ has begun creating regional offices across Liberia to enable local communities to easily access and participate in the process leading to establishing the two courts
Executive Order No. 148, signed in April 2025, formally established the Office of the War and Economic Crimes Court (OWECC), laying the groundwork for both courts.
The Anti-Corruption Court is scheduled to begin operations in November 2026, followed by the War and Economic Crimes Court in November 2027.
The courts aim to prosecute individuals responsible for atrocities committed during Liberia’s civil wars, as well as those involved in economic crimes that have undermined national development.
