For years, Matthew George, the outgoing Gbarpolu County Health Officer, was recalled early in April this year, and his license was revoked.

George posed as a medical practitioner with an ornate online presence showing the prestigious schools he attended and the work he did as a doctor.

But on April 21, the Liberia Medical Doctor Council (LMDC) investigated and found him to be a fake doctor who had been impersonating for decades.

George’s license has been revoked. In the communication to him, the LMDC invited him on the claim of being a medical doctor, but he failed to show up.

The LMDC requested him to provide proof of his credentials, and George presented an award verification letter as proof of obtaining a maiden medical degree from the University of Hertfordshire in the United Kingdom.

Investigation showed that the University of Hertfordshire does not currently offer a medical degree, as stated by George.

According to the LMDC investigation, another point of contention is the fact that George’s letter of award showed he obtained an MD and postgraduate medical degree in a space of four years, which LMDC says is impossible.

The credential committee informed him that his claim of being a medical doctor could not be substantiated by the documents he provided.

George did not provide an undergraduate medical certificate and internship certificate, which are absolute prerequisites for obtaining a license to practice medicine in Liberia.

“The credential committee has therefore, in its Friday, April 18, 2025, recommendation, recommended the revocation of your license effective immediately.”

George had the assigned license 654, which was removed from the LMDC roster, according to LMDC.

“The LMDC is hereby mandating that you refrain from indulging in the practice of medicine within the Republic of Liberia or risk prosecution if you continue to conduct yourself unauthorized to the contrary.  Also, any medical facilities authorizing you to practice medicine risk fines and closure and legal proceedings where applicable.”

The communication cc Minister of Health Louis Kpoto, Sylvester Grisby, Minister of State, and Botoe Kanneh, Gbarpolu senator.
