ArcelorMittal helping to upgrade Kakata-to-Firestone road

MONROVIA – On Tuesday, May 13th, ArcelorMittal Liberia (AML) officially launched the rehabilitation of a vital 28km road linking Kakata City’s Kpelleh Town to the Firestone Staff Clubhouse in Margibi County.

This long-anticipated project is more than just infrastructure – it provides a direct link to Roberts International Airport, connects multiple counties without requiring passage through Monrovia, and boosts access for farmers and local businesses, including Liberia’s largest rubber plantation.

The initiative responds directly to a formal request from Hon. Ellen Attoh-Wreh, Representative of Margibi District #3, reflecting AML’s strong commitment to community-driven development.

At the groundbreaking ceremony, Marcus Wleh, AML’s Head of Sustainability and External Relations, reaffirmed the steel giant’s purpose. “This project is not just about improving access for our operations; it’s about enhancing the quality of life for the people of Liberia, especially in Margibi County.”

The US$527,000 project will be implemented by Liberian-owned Frebenja Group of Companies and will employ up to 50 workers, with 80% of the workforce coming directly from communities along the road.

Led by Jallah Selmah, General Manager of Mines, and Benjamin Momolu, Road Construction Coordinator, the project prioritizes high safety standards and is expected to be completed in just two months.

“At ArcelorMittal Liberia, we believe industrial growth and community development must go hand in hand. This project stands as a clear example of how we’re putting our values into action: creating jobs, empowering local businesses, and building a more connected Liberia.”
