The Catholic Church in LIberia announces the sudden passing of two of its priests- Very Rev. Fr. Alphonsus B. Mombo and Very Rev. Fr. Roland G. Biah

MONROVIA — The Archdiocese of Monrovia is mourning the sudden deaths of two prominent Catholic priests, Very Rev. Fr. Alphonsus B. Mombo and Very Rev. Fr. Roland G. Biah, whose passing within days of each other has left the Catholic community in Liberia in deep grief.

The announcements were made in separate communications issued by the Archdiocese through Very Rev. Ambrose Dayouga Kroma, Vicar General and Moderator of the Curia, requesting prayers for the repose of the souls of the two clergymen.

Death of Fr. Alphonsus B. Mombo

According to the Archdiocese, Very Rev. Fr. Alphonsus B. Mombo, Rector of St. Charles Lwanga Pre-Major Seminary in Pipeline, died on Wednesday, March 11, 2026, after a brief illness. He was 57 years old.

Church authorities described Fr. Mombo as a dedicated priest who served the Archdiocese faithfully, particularly in the formation and mentorship of young men preparing for the Catholic priesthood.

“Very Rev. Fr. Mombo served the Archdiocese faithfully and generously, particularly in the formation of young men preparing for the priesthood,” the Archdiocese said in a statement. “His dedication to the Church and his commitment to priestly formation will always be remembered with gratitude.”

Fr. Mombo’s role as rector placed him at the center of priestly formation in Liberia, where he worked closely with seminarians preparing to serve the Church.

Church leaders said his death represents a significant loss not only to the seminary community but also to the broader Catholic faithful across the country.

Passing of Fr. Roland G. Biah

Just days after Fr. Mombo’s passing, the Archdiocese announced the death of Very Rev. Fr. Roland G. Biah, Pastor of St. Anthony of Padua Parish, chaplain of the Archdiocesan Youth and Young Adult Association, and a member of the Archdiocesan Finance Council.

Fr. Biah died on Friday, March 13, 2026, also after a brief illness. He was 53 years old.

In its statement, the Archdiocese described him as a devoted shepherd and compassionate priest whose ministry touched many lives.

“A devoted shepherd, compassionate priest, and faithful servant of God’s people, Father Biah gave himself generously to pastoral ministry, youth formation, and the life of the Archdiocese,” the statement said.

Church officials noted that Fr. Biah played an active role in youth ministry and pastoral leadership, helping to guide young Catholics and strengthen parish life.

Call for Prayer Across the Archdiocese

The Archdiocese has asked priests, religious communities, and the laity to celebrate Holy Mass and offer the Rosary for the repose of the souls of the two priests.

“At this moment of sorrow, we entrust them to the loving mercy of God,” the Archdiocese said, calling on the faithful to remember both priests in prayer.

Church authorities also urged the Catholic community to pray for the families of the two priests, parishioners, seminarians, and the entire Archdiocesan community as they mourn the loss.

Funeral arrangements for both clergymen are expected to be announced at a later date.

A Significant Loss to the Church

The deaths of Fr. Mombo and Fr. Biah represent a significant loss for the Catholic Church in Liberia, particularly at a time when the Archdiocese continues to focus on priestly formation, youth engagement, and pastoral outreach.

Both priests were widely respected within church circles for their dedication to ministry and service to the faithful.

As the Archdiocese mourns their passing, the Catholic community across Liberia is remembering them for their commitment to faith, leadership, and service to the Church.

“Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them,” the Archdiocese said. “May their souls rest in peace.”
