Three of the retirees of the Armed Froces of Liberia

MONROVIA – In a landmark event marking a new chapter in Liberia’s post-war history, the Armed Forces of Liberia (AFL) on Friday held its first-ever official retirement ceremony, honoring six veteran officers for their decades of distinguished service.

The event, held at the Barclay Training Center, brought together top government and military officials, including President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr., Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces.

“The service you have provided to Liberia is immeasurable,” President Boakai told the retirees. “Your loyalty and discipline have helped sustain the peace and stability our nation now enjoys.”

Those honored included Captain James S. Gbakoyah, Warrant Officer 2 Girley Merchant, Master Sergeant Richard S. Pah, the late Master Sergeant Jallah J. Sandy, First Sergeant Henry K. Bah, and First Sergeant Robert K. Toe.

Under the AFL Gratuity and Pension Policy, signed into law in August 2024, retirees will now receive at least 50 percent of their monthly salaries and gratuity benefits based on years of service—an unprecedented step toward institutionalizing dignity for soldiers after active duty.

Defense Minister Brig. Gen. (Rtd.) Geraldine Janet George hailed the retirees for their devotion: “You have set a legacy of professionalism and courage that will inspire generations to come.”

Chief of Staff Maj. Gen. Davidson Fayiah Forleh urged serving soldiers to emulate the retirees’ example: “Our oath to defend Liberia does not end when we remove the uniform—it is a lifelong commitment.”

The ceremony concluded with medal presentations and family tributes, symbolizing national gratitude and setting a new precedent for honoring military service in Liberia’s journey toward lasting peace.
