Bettomax Liberia and the Liberia Football Association (LFA) have signed a three-year partnership agreement to host the Bettomax Champions Cup a new pre-season tournament designed to showcase the nation’s top football talent.
The inaugural edition is set for August 23, 2025, featuring the top eight teams from last season’s LFA Men’s First Division.
This initiative forms part of Bettomax Liberia’s corporate social responsibility, aimed at promoting football and enhancing competitiveness within the Liberian league.
The tournament will encourage clubs to fight not only for the championship but also for a top-eight finish in order to qualify for the Champions Cup.
Speaking at the signing ceremony on Friday, August 15, 2025, at the LFA headquarters in Congo Town, Bettomax Liberia Operations Manager Fallah Briama described football as “more than just a sport in Liberia it’s a passion that unites the people.
He said the company sees it as a responsibility to invest in the game, noting that this marks Bettomax Liberia’s third major involvement in Liberian football, following sponsorship deals with Watanga FC (Men’s First Division) and Shaita Angels Football Club (Women’s Upper League).
Briama also highlighted Bettomax’s ongoing charitable work, which includes monthly donations worth US$1,000 to hospitals such as John F. Kennedy Medical Center, Catholic Hospital, and Redemption Hospital, as well as to orphanages and other medical institutions nationwide.
He explained that the tournament format will feature two groups, with the top two teams from each group advancing to the semifinals.
Winners will meet in the grand final, while the losing semifinalists will battle for third place.
Recognizing the growing influence of women’s football in Liberia, Briama added that future editions may include women’s clubs to ensure greater inclusivity.
LFA First Vice President Prof. Sekou Konneh described the agreement as “a blessing,” emphasizing that business partnerships are crucial to football’s growth.
“This is a very good opportunity that will be created as part of our partnership,” Prof. Konneh said, while encouraging other companies to follow Bettomax’s example in supporting the game through corporate social responsibility.
Bettomax Liberia Gaming Commercial Manager Livia Popescu reaffirmed the company’s commitment to women’s football.
She stressed that Bettomax operates on a structured blueprint, not on day-to-day opinions, and that expansion to include women’s clubs is already part of the tournament’s long-term plan.
“When we sponsored Watanga FC, no one asked us to add a women’s team, yet we did so on our own initiative,” Popescu said. “The same principle applies here.”
Cash Prizes for All Participants
The tournament will award cash prizes based on final standings:
Champions – US$10,000
Runners-Up – US$5,000
Third Place – US$3,500
Fourth Place – US$3,000
Fifth to Eighth Place – US$2,000 each
Additionally, each team has already received US$1,000 to assist with pre-tournament preparations.
Special Circumstances for the Inaugural Edition
League champions FC Fassell will not participate due to prior travel plans. Blackman Warrior, who finished ninth last season, will replace them in the lineup.
The tournament dates could not be shifted because of Liberia’s packed football calendar, which includes the WAFU Zone A U-17 Women’s Championship, FIFA international matches involving the Lone Star, and other scheduled events.
The 2025 Bettomax Champions Cup will run from Saturday, August 23 to Sunday, September 7, 2025, with all matches to be played at Tusa Field in Gardnersville.
