Minister Roland Layfette Giddings officially signed a Road Maintenance Contract

MONROVIA – Since its completion and subsequent dedication in 2011, the Caldwell Road has suffered major depressions resulting from persistent lack of maintenance, making traveling near impossible. The Caldwell-Dixville intersection, Sand Beach, and other critical spots along the road have posed strong challenges to the free movement of smaller vehicles for too long a time.

Interestingly, the World Bank funded “Liberia Urban Resilience Project (LURP)” lodged at the Ministry of Public Works has seen the necessity to lend support to road works in line with its mandate to enhance a resilient city by creating a conducive environment for everyone including road users. Through its competitive bidding process which received “No Objection” form the Bank, a contractor was hired to carry out maintenance works along the entire corridor.

On yesterday, June 10, 2025, Minister Roland Layfette Giddings officially signed a Road Maintenance Contract for the full rehabilitation of the Caldwell Road. In his remarks, he empathized with residents stating that “there’s absolutely no excuse for not rehabilitating major roads and allowing them to deteriorate in ways that inconvenience Liberians”. Minister Giddings, however, cautioned the Contractor to apply the highest standard in the maintenance works.

Replying to the Minister’s statement, John Youboty, the Manager of MDMC, the Liberian company contracted for the maintenance works, thanked the Ministry and assured the Minister that his company sees the opportunity as a mandate to develop the country and they are not taking it lightly. He also committed to ensuring that the right methods are applied to get the best results in the ultimate end.
