MONROVIA — The Government of the People’s Republic of China has reinforced its security cooperation with Liberia by donating a substantial package of equipment to the Liberia National Police (LNP), a move widely viewed as a boost to law enforcement capacity and public safety nationwide.
The donation, made through the Chinese Embassy in Monrovia, includes approximately 90 motorbikes, over 1,500 police uniforms, boots, rain gear, communication radios, rank insignia, and other essential operational materials. The items are expected to significantly enhance police mobility, visibility, and effectiveness, particularly in high-pressure urban environments.
Speaking to journalists following the handover ceremony at LNP headquarters, Inspector General Gregory O. W. Coleman described the donation as timely and critical to the Police’s reform and modernization agenda.

“This donation is meant to support our operational capability and will ease the many security challenges confronting the country,” Coleman said, thanking the Chinese government for what he termed a practical demonstration of partnership.
Later, in a statement posted on his official Facebook page, the Police Inspector General further underscored the importance of the support and the LNP’s broader institutional vision.
“On behalf of the Liberia National Police, we extend sincere appreciation to the People’s Republic of China through its Embassy in Monrovia for the donation of 90 motorbikes, police uniforms, and other essential operational equipment,” Coleman wrote.
“We will continue to go all out to create and strengthen the necessary partnerships required to bring to life the professional, capable, and service-driven police institution we envision for Liberia.”

Deployment Priorities and Rural Concerns
When asked whether the donated equipment would benefit rural parts of the country, Coleman acknowledged the serious security and logistical challenges faced by communities outside Monrovia but clarified that initial deployment would prioritize Montserrado County.
He explained that the county remains a hotspot for traffic congestion, population density, and public order challenges, requiring immediate and sustained police presence. However, he assured that rural areas would not be permanently excluded as additional resources become available.
A Broader Pattern of Chinese Support
The latest donation is part of a broader pattern of Chinese assistance to Liberia spanning security, infrastructure, health, education, and human capacity development. Over the years, China has emerged as one of Liberia’s most visible bilateral partners, providing both material and technical support to key state institutions.

In the security sector alone, China has previously contributed to:
- Logistics and equipment support for law enforcement and security agencies
- Training opportunities for Liberian security personnel
- Peace and stability efforts through its historical participation in UN peacekeeping operations in Liberia
Beyond policing, Chinese support has included the construction and rehabilitation of hospitals, schools, government facilities, and roads, along with scholarships for Liberian students and medical assistance programs.
Strengthening Public Safety

Security analysts say the motorbikes included in the donation could substantially improve police patrols and rapid response, especially in congested neighborhoods where conventional patrol vehicles are less effective.
As Liberia continues efforts to professionalize its police force and strengthen public trust, authorities emphasize that transparent management and effective utilization of donated resources will be critical.
For the Liberia National Police, the Chinese donation not only enhances day-to-day operations but also reinforces a long-term vision of a more professional, responsive, and service-oriented police institution—one built through sustained partnerships and shared commitment to public safety.
