MONROVIA – September 1 – Construction of two major overpass bridges in Monrovia—funded by the Government of the People’s Republic of China—is set to begin on September 2, 2025, the Government of Liberia has officially announced.
The China-Aid Overpass Bridge Project, valued at approximately US$41 million, marks one of the largest infrastructure investments by China in Liberia in recent years. The initiative is expected to significantly ease traffic congestion along Tubman Boulevard, a major thoroughfare that links central Monrovia to eastern suburbs including Paynesville and Congo Town.

According to the project plan released by Liberian authorities, the West Overpass Bridge will stretch 1,140 meters, while the East Overpass Bridge will cover 870 meters. Both structures will include auxiliary access roads, exit and entry ramps, and pedestrian facilities—designed to improve road safety and increase mobility in some of the city’s most heavily trafficked areas.
Signed in 2021 Under Weah Administration
The overpass project originates from a framework agreement signed in June 2021 under the administration of former President George Manneh Weah. The signing followed years of bilateral discussions and feasibility studies supported by China’s Ministry of Commerce and the Chinese Embassy in Monrovia.

The agreement was part of China’s broader commitment to support infrastructure development in Liberia, including roads, public buildings, health facilities, and human capacity development. The new bridges represent a strategic step under the China-Liberia cooperation framework, aligning with the goals of the Belt and Road Initiative and Liberia’s national development agenda.
Two-Year Completion Timeline
The construction, which is expected to last two years (2025–2027), will be executed by Chinese engineering firms under the supervision of both the Liberian Ministry of Public Works and China’s technical team. Upon completion, the overpasses are projected to dramatically reduce commute times, facilitate cross-town transport, and boost commercial activities across the capital.

Government Applauds Milestone
Liberian officials have hailed the project as a critical milestone in the country’s post-war reconstruction and modernization efforts.
“This is a game-changing project for urban mobility in Monrovia,” said a senior official at the Ministry of Public Works. “It will not only reduce congestion but also open new economic corridors, benefiting local businesses and the general public.”
China’s former Ambassador to Liberia, Ren Yisheng, had previously described the project as a “symbol of enduring friendship” between the two nations, noting that the infrastructure would have a lasting impact on Liberia’s economic landscape.

Public Urged to Cooperate
As construction commences, the Ministry of Public Works has called on residents, commuters, and transport operators to cooperate with contractors and adhere to traffic detours that may be introduced during the construction period.
A public awareness campaign is expected to be launched to inform citizens about safety measures and alternate travel routes.
