Alex Benedict Cummings speaking to journalists at the ANC 4th Convention

KAKATA, MARGIBI COUNTY – The Political Leader of the Alternative National Congress (ANC), Mr. Alexander Benedict Cummings, has pledged sweeping reforms and a private sector–driven transformation of Liberia should he become president in 2030.

Speaking Saturday at the 4th National Convention of the ANC in Kakata, Margibi County, the former Coca-Cola executive expressed confidence that Liberia can rise from poverty and underdevelopment through sound economic policies anchored on accountability, job creation, and investment in people.

Cummings thanked delegates and members of the party for their “unwavering belief” in the ANC’s principles and vision, reaffirming his commitment to tackling the daily struggles of ordinary Liberians.

“Too many of our people go to bed hungry. Too many parents can’t afford school fees or medical bills. It’s time for real change that gives every Liberian a fair chance,” he said.

He outlined plans to stimulate private-sector growth, attract foreign direct investment, and create an environment where Liberian-owned businesses can thrive. According to him, Liberia’s economic potential has been stifled by corruption, weak governance, and a lack of accountability — problems his administration would confront head-on.

Party Leadership Renewed

The convention also elected new officials to steer the affairs of the ANC for the next term. Cllr. Lafayette O. Gould was re-elected as National Chairman, while Desmond Nimely emerged as the new Secretary-General. Alieu Kiadii was chosen unopposed as Chairperson of the ANC Youth League, and Rosa Parks won as Secretary-General of the Women’s Wing.

The newly elected chairman conducted the convention’s proceedings, expressing gratitude to delegates, diaspora supporters, and guests. He called for reconciliation and unity within the party, urging members to “work harder and stand together” to position the ANC as a credible political force ahead of future elections.

A Call for Unity and Renewal

Cummings, in a post-convention interview, reaffirmed that the ANC’s mission remains rooted in inclusivity and reform.

“I’m committed to hearing the voices of all Liberians,” he told reporters. “Our goal is not just to win elections but to build a country where opportunity is not determined by who you know, but by what you can do.”

The 4th National Convention, political analysts say, served as both a test of the ANC’s internal democracy and a rallying point for rebuilding momentum after the party’s underwhelming performance in the 2023 presidential election, where Cummings secured 1.61% of the national vote.

Despite this, the ANC leader has maintained a strong presence in national discourse, calling for governance reforms, economic diversification, and youth empowerment.

Background

Founded in 2013, the Alternative National Congress emerged as a breakaway faction of the Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) and has since positioned itself as a reform-oriented opposition party advocating integrity and modern governance.

Cummings, who first ran for president in 2017 and again in 2023, continues to champion anti-corruption and economic transformation policies, emphasizing that Liberia’s progress depends on leadership grounded in “competence, character, and compassion.”

As the ANC looks ahead, its leadership says it is focused on building grassroots structures, strengthening internal cohesion, and preparing for a stronger showing in the 2029 General Elections.
