MONROVIA – Dr. Akinwumi A. Adesina, President and Chairman of the Boards of Directors of the African Development Bank Group, delivered an impassioned address in Monrovia, urging the government and people of Liberia to embrace their potential and work collaboratively towards the nation’s resurgence.
The address, titled “Liberia: Arise and Shine!” was made at a formal gathering attended by President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, key government officials, and members of the media.
Dr. Adesina reflected on Liberia’s rich history as a beacon of hope in Africa, noting its role in inspiring independence movements across the continent.
He acknowledged notable historical figures from Liberia, including Dr. Romeo Horton, whose vision led to the establishment of the African Development Bank in 1964, highlighting the pride he felt in representing the institution in the country.
In his address, Dr. Adesina commended President Boakai’s leadership and the government’s commitment to prioritizing economic recovery and growth.
He emphasized the need to capitalize on existing opportunities to elevate the country’s economic status—a sentiment echoed in the President’s inaugural speech.

The African Development Bank, under Dr. Adesina’s leadership, has invested over $1.02 billion in Liberia.
He outlined several significant projects that have improved infrastructure and energy access, including road construction and electricity distribution initiatives.
He spotlighted the recent approval of US$16 million for establishing the Youth Entrepreneurship Investment Bank of Liberia, aimed at empowering the nation’s youth the majority of whom are under 35 with business opportunities.
Dr. Adesina shared insights from his leadership experience, emphasizing the importance of vision, accountability, teamwork, and rigorous performance management.
He coined the phrase “One Government” approach, advocating for collaboration across governmental departments and agencies to achieve collective goals efficiently.
He strongly urged the government to focus on the management of natural resources, advocating for local value addition rather than the exportation of raw materials.

This approach, he argued, would pave the way for true economic development and prosperity for Liberia.
As he concluded, Dr. Adesina called on all Liberians to unite under the national banner, encouraging them to embrace their identity and work together to build a brighter future.
He quoted the Prophet Isaiah, inspiring hope and resilience among the attendees: “Arise and shine; for thy light has come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee.” His address was met with enthusiasm and renewed determination from Liberia’s leadership as they embark on the journey of realizing the country’s potential and setting it on a path to sustainable development and growth.
