KAKATA, MARGIBI – In a significant turn of events, the drivers of the Margibi County branch of the Federation of Road Transport Union of Liberia (FRTUL) are on peaceful protest against what they describe as the continuous obstruction and harassment of traffic by officers of the Liberia National Police (LNP).
The union claims that these actions not only disrupt the flow of traffic but also lead to widespread corruption, which they term as “broad daylight stealing.”

The protest, planned for this week, aims to draw attention to the challenges faced by drivers across the country due to rampant harassment of officers of the Traffic Division of the LNP.
According to union representatives, the police’s interference in daily commutes has become increasingly problematic, leading to delays and additional financial burdens on drivers.
“We are here to call on the government to take immediate action against the corrupt practices rampant within the police force,” said a spokesperson for the Drivers Union.

“The constant obstruction and harassment by the police have made our work difficult, and if nothing is done, we will escalate our actions.”
The union alleges that officers often set up roadblocks under dubious pretenses, leading to unwarranted fines and extortion.
Drivers have reported feeling unsafe and powerless, with many claiming that they are forced to pay bribes to move freely on the roads.
The protest is expected to gather significant support from drivers across the nation, as frustrations with the police and their tactics have reached a boiling point.

The Union leaders have urged the government to investigate these practices and implement measures to ensure that drivers can operate without fear of harassment.
As the protest approaches, it remains to be seen how the government and law enforcement will respond to the demands of the Drivers Union.
The coming days could mark a pivotal moment in the ongoing struggle for justice and fairness on the roads of Liberia.
