Klay, Bomi County – The Government of Liberia, through the National Fisheries and Aquaculture Authority (NaFAA), has officially launched the construction of a state-of-the-art aquaculture hatchery in Klay District, Bomi County, with support from the World Bank.

The groundbreaking ceremony, held Friday, marked a significant step toward revitalizing Liberia’s fisheries sector.

The initiative, under the Liberia Sustainable Management of Fisheries Project, is expected to enhance the country’s aquaculture capabilities, improve food security, and stimulate job creation in rural areas.

The event brought together senior government officials, local authorities, representatives of civil society organizations, international partners, and student groups.

The hatchery, once completed, will operate under a Public-Private Partnership model. NaFAA plans to competitively recruit a private company to manage the facility, aiming to attract private investment, drive innovation, and establish stronger market linkages for fish farmers.

NaFAA’s Acting Executive Director, Cyrus Saygbe, emphasized persistent challenges in the sector, including limited access to affordable credit and high-quality fingerlings, which have long impeded growth and increased production costs for local fish farmers.

He said as part of its broader decentralization agenda, NaFAA is also taking strategic measures to strengthen its operational resilience and ensure sustainability across the fisheries value chain.

The Klay Hatchery project is positioned as a transformative venture that could turn aquaculture into a major contributor to Liberia’s economy.

locally sourced raw materials for feed production—reducing also addressing two of the sector’s most pressing challenges,inherently one of Liberia’s most promising industries.

He said technical assistance, extension services, and continuous time guidance and solutions,operational barriers, boosting productivity, and preparing
of trained specialists at the hatchery.

According to NFAA Boss these experts will offer research and development wing that will explore the use of operational costs, and hindered the growth of what is of a new chapter—one defined by accessibility, more accessible to smallholder farmers.

Through capacity-building, ensuring that farmers have access to real local producers for market readiness, we are enabling our fish fish feed and research.
