MONROVIA, Liberia — Former Minister of Commerce and Industry Amin Modad has publicly welcomed a new chapter in Liberia–Indonesia relations following the appointment of his wife, Fredrica Perkins-Modad, as Honorary Consul of the Republic of Indonesia to Liberia.

In a gratitude message posted on his Facebook page, Modad expressed appreciation to Prabowo Subianto, President of the Republic of Indonesia, for the appointment, describing it as an opportunity to deepen bilateral cooperation and unlock mutual socio-economic benefits between the two countries.

“This is an incredible opportunity to strengthen the relationship between the two countries and explore avenues for shared growth,” Modad wrote, underscoring the diplomatic and economic significance of the role.

A Diplomatic Milestone

The appointment of an Honorary Consul marks a strategic step in expanding Indonesia’s diplomatic footprint in Liberia, particularly in areas of trade, investment, education, and cultural exchange. Indonesia—Southeast Asia’s largest economy—has in recent years increased its engagement with African countries, seeking partnerships that promote South-South cooperation.

Observers note that Liberia stands to benefit from Indonesia’s experience in agro-processing, manufacturing, palm oil value chains, and small- and medium-scale enterprise development—sectors that align closely with Liberia’s own development priorities.

Acknowledging Diplomatic Support

Modad extended special recognition to Usra Hendra Harahap, retired General and former Indonesian Ambassador to Abuja, as well as the current Ambassador, Bambang Suharto, praising the Indonesian Embassy staff for their “welcomed and unwavering support” throughout the process.

He also thanked Liberia’s diplomatic leadership, singling out Foreign Minister Sara Beysolow Nyanti, Liberia’s Ambassador to Nigeria John A. Ballout Jr., Deputy Chief of Mission Kansualism Kansuah, and Mission Counsellor Lawrence Amajie for facilitating engagements during the family’s visit to Nigeria. Modad further acknowledged Clarence Massaquoi for attending the ceremony despite a demanding schedule.

Personal Pride, Public Service

In a personal note, the former minister congratulated his wife, expressing confidence in her capacity to discharge the responsibilities of the office with distinction. “I am so proud of you,” he wrote, pledging the family’s full support as she undertakes the mandate.

Modad’s Public Profile

Amin Modad previously served as Liberia’s Minister of Commerce and Industry, where he was associated with efforts to improve the business climate, strengthen trade facilitation, and encourage private-sector-led growth. His public endorsement of the appointment reflects both a personal milestone and a broader commitment to diplomacy that advances Liberia’s development interests.

With Fredrica Perkins-Modad’s appointment, Liberia and Indonesia are expected to explore expanded cooperation, signaling renewed momentum in bilateral relations.
