Senegale captain lifts the trophy high as he is lifted on the shoulders of his colleagues

MONROVIA — Liberia’s football icon and former President, George Manneh Weah, has strongly criticized the Confederation of African Football (CAF) over its controversial decision to strip Senegal of the AFCON 2025 title and award it to Morocco, warning that the move undermines the integrity of the game.

In a detailed statement released on March 18, Weah argued that the decision contradicts the fundamental principles of football governance, particularly the authority of match officials on the field of play.

“The Referee Is Final Authority”

Weah grounded his argument in FIFA Laws of the Game Law 5, emphasizing that referees have the final say on decisions during a match.

“In football, the Laws of the Game are clear: the referee on the pitch is the final authority,” Weah stated, adding that once a match is completed, “the result obtained on the field must stand.”

He noted that during the AFCON final between Senegal and Morocco, the referee allowed play to continue after Senegal’s brief walk-off protest, and the match was ultimately completed with a result determined on the pitch.

CAF Decision “Sets Dangerous Precedent”

The former Ballon d’Or winner warned that CAF’s post-match ruling risks setting a troubling precedent in African football.

“Football must be decided on the pitch, not re-decided after the final whistle,” he declared.

According to Weah, allowing administrative bodies to overturn completed match results could open the door for future interference in on-field decisions such as penalties, offside calls, and red cards.

“Where will it end?” he asked, cautioning that such actions could erode trust in the sport.

Call for Intervention by CAS

Weah called on the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) and other relevant authorities to urgently review the matter.

“I call on CAS… to move decisively so that this travesty does not stand,” he said.

His remarks align with growing calls from football stakeholders who argue that the integrity of competitions must be preserved through consistent application of rules.

Clarification on Misrepresented Views

The former Ballon d’Or winner also addressed what he described as false claims circulating on social media suggesting he supported CAF’s decision.

“All those circulating my image and attaching it to such fallacious statements are advised to refrain,” Weah said, distancing himself from the reports.

Background: AFCON Final Controversy

The controversy stems from the AFCON 2025 final, where Senegal initially emerged victorious on the field. However, CAF’s Appeal Board later ruled that Senegal’s temporary walk-off constituted a violation of competition rules, overturning the result and awarding Morocco a 3–0 victory.

The decision has sparked widespread debate across the continent and beyond, with critics arguing that the outcome should have been determined solely by events on the pitch.

A Voice of Authority in African Football

Weah’s intervention carries significant weight given his stature as Africa’s only Ballon d’Or winner and a three-time African Footballer of the Year.

His comments are likely to intensify scrutiny of CAF’s governance and reignite discussions about consistency, transparency, and fairness in African football administration.

As the debate continues, one message from the Liberian legend stands out clearly: the credibility of the game depends on respecting decisions made where football is played—on the pitch.
