MONROVIA – The Green Revolution of Liberia, a pro-democracy and political advocacy group, has condemned the Government of Liberia for what it terms as GOL’s latest descent into political mercenaryism—a dark strategy that seeks to weaponize state power against dissenting voices, echoing the chilling shadows of the country’s bitter past.
The group, through its Revolutionary Gladiator and National Chairman, Manja Varney Gbassey Kromah, says it views with utmost alarm the disturbing statement issued by the Government on Saturday, May 24, 2025, targeting Bomi County Senator Edwin Melvin Snowe, who they refer to as a seasoned legislator and opposition leader, simply for expressing a sincere, patriotic critique of the unbearable economic hardship facing the people of Liberia.
“This action by the government is not just undemocratic—it is counterproductive, dangerous, and confirms what many have feared: President Joseph Nyuma Boakai is no longer in control. Instead, he appears to be held hostage by a cabal of bitter, vindictive elements within his party—figures with dark, unhealed legacies from our 14-year civil war. These individuals are now brazenly attempting to reverse the democratic progress hard-won by the blood, sweat, and resilience of the Liberian people,” The Green Revolution statement notes.
The pro-democracy and political advocacy group went on further to state: “Senator Snowe’s remarks—calling for unity among opposition forces to check the incompetence and impunity of the ruling elite—should be embraced in any healthy democracy. Yet, rather than engage his views with maturity and respect, the government chose instead to label him an “enemy of the state,” an irresponsible and incendiary accusation that now places his life, that of his family, and his supporters in grave danger.”

“We remind the public that this is not an isolated event. This administration has already displayed tendencies of tyranny, as seen during the 2023 presidential elections marred by targeted political violence, intimidation, and voter suppression—perpetrated largely by actors aligned with President Boakai’s party. The same party now seeks to criminalize opposition thought and dismantle Liberia’s democratic space.”
Lamenting through its statement the Green Revolution of Liberia intones that: “What is most disheartening is the silence of our traditional ally, the United States of America. Liberia’s democratic journey has always been strengthened by American partnership—yet today, despite rising nepotism, sectionalism, tribalism, rampant corruption, and escalating poverty, the U.S. remains disturbingly mute. We ask: where is the voice of democracy when it matters most? Where is the commitment to the rule of law and human rights?”
Concluding, the pro-democracy and political advocacy – the Green Revolution of Liberia iterates that “we will not stand by in silence as our country is dragged back into the abyss. We stand firmly with Senator Snowe and all voices of conscience who dare to speak truth to power. We call on all Liberians—young and old, urban and rural, men and women—to rise up peacefully but firmly against this creeping dictatorship. We call on the international community, civil society, the media, and Liberia’s diaspora to denounce this madness before it is too late.”
It can be recalled the Liberian Government through the Ministry of Information, Cultural Affairs and Tourism (MICAT) condemned Bomi County Senator Edwin Melvin Snowe for alleged statement that the Ministry attributed to him. The Ministry issued its official statement on the purported statement from the Senator on Saturday, May 24, 2025.
But the Senator responded and termed the Ministry’s statement as “false and unfounded.”
