At the commencement of the Tech Camp on Monday, July 21, 2025, University of Liberia Vice Vice President for Institutional Development and Planning Prof. Weade Kobbah Boley said the Tech Camp is being hosted to stimulate the children’s interest in technology, innovation, information technology (IT), and help prepare them to be the next generation of Liberian technocrats.

She described the Holiday Tech Camp as very unique, detailing that this is the first in Liberia, sponsored by UNDP, and managed here by the University of Liberia.

“We are fortunate to be among nine universities in the world hosting a holiday tech camp,” Prof. Boley explained on Monday.

The facilitators are Messrs.  Nzometiah Nervis and Njita Arnaud Tenkan from Cameroon. These facilitators have vast knowledge and experience working and teaching young children new technologies.

According to Prof. Boley, universities like Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) are also on that list, stating this is how they identify potential innovators, creators, entrepreneurs, especially in the technological world.

Prof. Boley disclosed that these young people will be learning coding, drone technology, cyber safety, and machine learning with 3D printing. She added that hopefully by the time they end this pilot program, they will have certificates indicating the completion of this training.

“With the success of this one, I’m very excited about it. We hope that every year we’ll be able to have more and more students come in.”

Mr. Robert Hensley-Aguirre, Jr., Information Technology Officer, UNICEF, termed this as a good opportunity for children to come and be a part of the Elevated Camp.

As a technician, he said he supports the different lab coordinators, ensuring that equipment and IT systems are fully up and running to allow people, innovators, faculties, and students who go to the UNICEF to be able to do their research, to be able to do their project work.

“Three in one. So we have 50 students from all the different schools, both public and private schools in Liberia. And we participate in the 30-day Holiday Tech Camp,” he said.
