Rep. Yatu Rugie Barry, representing District #1 in Montserrado County

MONROVIA – In a significant move, the 55th House of Representatives has unanimously voted to summon officials from the University of Liberia and other state-run universities to explain the need for increased annual budgetary allotments. This decision comes in light of a communication from Rep. Yatu Rugie Barry, representing District #1 in Montserrado County, advocating for a substantial budget increase for the University of Liberia.

During recent plenary sessions, Rep. Barry called for the annual budgetary allocation for the University of Liberia to rise from US$33 million to US$45 million. She highlighted the urgent operational and infrastructural challenges plaguing the university, citing deteriorating facilities, a shortage of essential utilities and equipment, and insufficient student transportation as critical issues that must be addressed.

โ€œThe current conditions not only hinder national development goals but also infringe upon Liberia’s constitutional and international commitments to provide access to quality education in a safe and conducive environment,โ€ Rep. Barry asserted during her address to the House.

Acknowledging the gravity of these challenges, the House of Representatives has decided to extend their inquiry to include other public universities across the nation. Representatives from the committees on Education and Ways and Means will gather accounts of previous budgetary allocations and reasons for requiring increases in future funding.

This initiative reflects a growing concern among lawmakers regarding the state of higher education in Liberia and underscores the pressing need for investment in the nation’s public universities. As the institutions grapple with dwindling resources and infrastructure failures, the outcome of this dialogue could prove pivotal in shaping the future of education in Liberia.

The upcoming sessions with university officials are set to provide a platform for transparency and accountability, essential steps in ensuring that higher education continues to meet the needs of students and the broader society. The HOR aims to finalize its budgetary recommendations in the coming months, potentially altering the landscape of university funding as it seeks to uplift educational standards and access across the country.
