MONROVIA – In a significant step towards the conservation of marine resources and the sustainable use of ocean biodiversity, the House of Representatives of Liberia has ratified the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Convention on the Law of the Sea, focusing on the protection of marine biological diversity in areas beyond national jurisdiction.

This pivotal decision was made during the House’s 7th Day Sitting of the 2nd Quarter of the 2nd Session.

The ratification comes after an extensive evaluation by the House Committee on Maritime Affairs, spearheaded by Mr. Austin B. Taylor, Sr., Representative of Maryland County District #3.

The committee’s report underscored the need for Liberia to engage actively in global efforts aimed at safeguarding the marine environment and advancing sustainable practices in ocean governance.

The agreement, commonly known as the Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdictions (BBNJ) Agreement, represents a landmark moment in the realm of international marine law.

It addresses the challenges faced by marine biodiversity, which constitutes nearly two-thirds of the world’s ocean space and is often vulnerable to human activities such as overfishing, pollution, and habitat destruction.

During the recent plenary session, members of the House deliberated on the benefits of this ratification before unanimously endorsing it.

In his remarks, Speaker Richard Nagbe Koon emphasized the importance of the agreement in reinforcing Liberia’s commitment to environmental stewardship and maritime cooperation. Following the endorsement, the Speaker instructed the Chief Clerk of the House to forward the ratification instrument to the Liberian Senate for concurrence, as is customary in the legislative process.

The passage of this resolution is not just a victory for Liberia but also aligns with global aspirations outlined in international agreements aimed at protecting marine ecosystems.

It illustrates Liberia’s proactive stance in addressing global environmental challenges and promoting sustainable use of ocean resources.

The ratification of the BBNJ Agreement positions Liberia among countries committed to pioneering conservation efforts in international waters, paving the way for enhanced cooperation with international bodies such as the United Nations and the International Maritime Organization. As Liberia embarks on this significant journey towards effective marine governance, the nation plays a crucial role in shaping a sustainable future for its rich marine resources, benefiting not only its own interests but those of the global community.
