MONROVIA – In a proactive response to growing anxiety surrounding air travel safety, the House of Representatives has summoned officials from the Liberia Airport Authority and the Ministry of Transport to a plenary session next Tuesday. The meeting aims to address urgent concerns following a distressing near-miss involving an ASKY Airlines flight on its route from Accra, Ghana, to Monrovia, Liberia.
The call for the hearing arose from a formal complaint by Mr. Emmanuel Dahn, Representative for Montserrado County District #7.
Dahn expressed alarm over a recent incident where the aircraft had to make an emergency landing in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, provoking a wave of fear among passengers. Eyewitness accounts shared on social media highlighted the harrowing experiences of travelers, amplifying public anxiety regarding aviation standards.

Dahn underscored the severity of the situation, referring to “life-threatening incidents” and criticized ASKY Airlines for its inadequate handling of baggage protocols. Reports indicated that several passengers were left without their checked luggage, a situation that further exacerbated the travelers’ distress. “Lives are lost around the world due to poor handling of travel protocols,” Dahn emphasized, calling for immediate legislative action to avert potential future dangers.
During the upcoming hearing, the Liberia Airport Authority and the Ministry of Transport are expected to present comprehensive updates on several critical issues: the specific details surrounding the recent emergency landing, the safety measures currently implemented in the aviation sector, strategies to ensure incidents like this do not recur, and clarifications on passengers’ rights and luggage handling practices.

Public and media interest in the hearing is anticipated to be high, with increasing calls for enhanced regulatory oversight over foreign airlines operating within Liberia’s airspace. As officials prepare to address these pressing issues, the focus remains on ensuring the safety and well-being of passengers who rely on air travel.
The outcome of the hearing could pave the way for necessary reforms in aviation safety standards, reassuring the public and restoring confidence in Liberia’s air travel infrastructure.
