Independent Information Commission launches 5-yr plan

MONROVIA, Liberia – The Independent Information Commission (IIC) officially launched its five-year strategic plan for 2025-2030 at the Monrovia City Hall on Tuesday. The event was attended by key figures, including Hon. Josah T. Hodges, IIC Commissioner, Stephen King, Minister of Justice, and various stakeholders from civil society and government.

During the launch, Hon. Hodges emphasized the importance of transparency and accountability in governance. “This strategic plan represents a new direction for the IIC, aiming to enhance compliance with the Freedom of Information Act of 2010,” he stated. The plan seeks to empower citizens by ensuring their right to access information held by public bodies, crucial for democratic governance and public service delivery.

The plan addresses challenges such as limited public awareness and institutional compliance, outlining a roadmap to strengthen the IIC’s capacity and operational effectiveness. It includes training programs for over 700 officials across various government agencies, enhancing public education initiatives, and developing a digital information request tracking system.

Cllr. Bonor M. Varmah, President of the Liberia National Bar Association, praised the commission’s ambitious goals and expressed readiness to collaborate on legal reforms. The successful implementation of this strategic plan is expected to bolster public trust in government institutions and promote a culture of openness in Liberia.
