The Liberia Football Association (LFA) has imposed severe disciplinary sanctions on Shaita Angels FC President, Ms. Benita W. Urey, and Eugene Swen following findings of involvement in match manipulation during the 2024/2025 First Division League season.
In a media release dated January 8, 2026, the LFA Grievance and Disciplinary Committee ruled that both individuals violated Part II, Chapter 2 (20)(1&3) of the FIFA Disciplinary Code, which criminalizes the manipulation of football matches and competitions. The ruling stems from investigations into two league fixtures—Paynesville FC versus Freeport FC, and Shaita Angels FC versus Paynesville FC.
As a result of her role in what the Committee described as a conspiracy to influence match outcomes, Ms. Urey has been banned from participating in all football-related activities—administrative, sporting, or otherwise—for a period of five years. The sanction also bars her from entering any football stadium during the duration of the ban. Player Eugene Swen has similarly been banned from all football-related activities and stadium access for two years, inclusive of a prior suspension.

Shaita Angels FC: A Brief Background
Shaita Angels FC is one of Liberia’s most recognizable community-based football clubs, with a history spanning decades in domestic football. The club has competed in both the First Division and lower leagues at various times, earning a reputation for passionate supporters and producing notable local talents. However, like many Liberian clubs, Shaita Angels has faced periodic administrative and financial challenges, making the latest sanction one of the most significant setbacks in its recent history.

LFA’s Ongoing Crackdown on Match Manipulation
The sanctions against Shaita Angels officials are part of a broader effort by the LFA to protect the integrity of domestic football. In recent years, the Association has taken disciplinary actions against clubs, players, and officials accused of match-fixing, player eligibility violations, and administrative misconduct. These measures have included point deductions, relegations, fines, and long-term bans from football activities.
LFA officials have consistently maintained that match manipulation poses a serious threat to the credibility of the game, undermines fair competition, and discourages investment and fan confidence. By aligning its disciplinary decisions with FIFA regulations, the LFA has signaled a zero-tolerance stance against practices that compromise sporting integrity.

Implications for Liberian Football
The latest ruling sends a strong message across the Liberian football landscape, particularly to club administrators and players. Observers say the decision reinforces the LFA’s commitment to transparency, fair play, and accountability, while also serving as a warning that status or influence will not shield offenders from punishment.
As the 2024/2025 season fallout continues, attention is expected to focus on how clubs strengthen internal controls and ethical standards to avoid similar sanctions. For Shaita Angels FC, the immediate challenge will be rebuilding trust, stabilizing leadership, and ensuring compliance with LFA and FIFA regulations as Liberian football authorities continue their campaign to safeguard the game’s integrity.
