Passengers have complained that their luggages are being tampered with at the airport especially upon arrival

MONROVIA — The Liberia Airport Authority (LAA) has announced the launch of an investigation into allegations made by one Sabey Varpilah, a recent traveller through Roberts International Airport (RIA), who claims personal items went missing from his luggage following interactions with customs officers.

Mr. Varpilah’s account, shared via social media, has since garnered public attention.

In his post, he detailed a troubling series of events during his departure on May 16 aboard Royal Air Maroc.

According to Varpilah, after a repacking process due to an overweight luggage issue and the payment of extra baggage fees in cash, amid reportedly non-functional ATMs, he was summoned by airport personnel for carrying food items that allegedly required certificates.

He recounted an encounter with customs officers in which he was subtly encouraged to offer “compensation” due to the lack of required documentation.

Unable to comply due to a lack of U.S. currency, Varpilah said he was eventually allowed to proceed to immigration.

However, upon arrival in the United States, he discovered that nine parcels were missing from his checked boxes, including some items he had agreed to carry on behalf of acquaintances.

“The way this incident was handled leads me to believe the boxes were tampered with after I was escorted away,” Varpilah stated in his post. “Had I been told that I couldn’t carry the items, I would have left them with my family. The fact that they were taken without any explanation or notification is unacceptable.”

However, in a swift response issued on Monday, May 19, the LAA expressed concern and affirmed its commitment to a thorough investigation.

The Authority emphasized its dedication to transparency, integrity, and the protection of travelers’ rights.

“We take these allegations seriously,” the LAA said in its official statement. “A review of CCTV footage during the relevant timeframe is already underway, and we are calling on Mr. Varpilah to assist with the investigation by providing further details.”

The Authority reiterated its zero-tolerance stance on misconduct, stating that any individuals found to be involved in wrongdoing will be held accountable.

RIA, Liberia’s primary international airport, has faced public scrutiny in the past regarding service delivery and traveller experience.

This incident renews calls for modernization, stronger enforcement of airport regulations, and a shift away from unofficial practices that often place passengers in uncomfortable or vulnerable situations.

Travellers and stakeholders have been encouraged by the LAA to report similar concerns and to trust that proper procedures will be followed in pursuit of justice and operational integrity.
