The Management of the Liberia Airport Authority (LAA) has held a meaningful discussion with the Liberia Revenue Authority’s Customs & Anti-Smuggling Team assigned at the Roberts International Airport (RIA).

The meeting, which took place in the Administrative Building of the RIA, is aimed at fostering cooperation in the fight against smuggling and improving customs operations at the airport.

During the discussion, the LRA’s Anti-Smuggling Team, headed by Abel Sneh, highlighted strategic plans of actions intended to strengthen and re-enforce measures that will improve customs inspection protocols at the Roberts International Airport.

Sneh said that better coordination with the Liberia Airport Authority could significantly enhance their capability to identify and intercept smuggled goods.

In response, LAA’s Managing Director, Mr. Jero H. Mends-Cole lauded the team for such coordination and stressed that the importance of an integrated and robust approach to customs enforcement cannot be overlooked; especially when taxable items are major revenue generating tools.

“Our goal is to ensure that the Roberts International Airport, which is the gateway of the country, remains a safe and secure hub for legitimate travellers and goods while preventing illegal activities. This is very commendable; the collaborative effort is crucial to ensure effective regulation of goods entering the country,” MD Mends-Cole added.

Making remarks also, LAA’s Deputy Managing Director for Operations, Hon. Egon M. Kuiah said this consolidated effort will foster a deeper collaboration with the airport authority in combating the smuggling of drugs, minerals, and other illegal substances in and out of Liberia through the airport.

Since taking over, Hon. Kuiah has been actively engaged with partners of the airport in ensuring that key safety and operational issues are in compliance with ICAO standards in operating an efficient and effective airport.

Airports throughout the world are major hubs for international travel and trade, making them vulnerable points for smuggling operations.

They believe these measures are crucial in enhancing national security, economic stability, the protection of human rights, among others.
