Chess Federation donating three chess boards to SWAL

The Liberia Chess Federation (LCF) has donated three chess boards to the Sports Writers Association of Liberia (SWAL) in a move aimed at strengthening collaboration between the two institutions.

The presentation was held on Saturday, August 30, 2025, at the Federation’s office in Sinkor.

Speaking at the ceremony, LCF Vice President, Mr. Dekpah Gonkartee, commended SWAL for its continuous role in promoting chess across Liberia.

He described the gesture as both an appreciation and an investment in a growing partnership.

“SWAL has played a significant role in elevating the visibility of chess in Liberia. It is only befitting that we support them with the tools to further engage with the sport,” Mr. Gonkartee said.

Receiving the donation, SWAL President, Mr. Varmah Kamara, thanked the Chess Federation for the kind gesture, assuring that the boards would be utilized effectively.

Kamara emphasized that chess is more than a recreational game, highlighting its importance in fostering critical thinking, strategy, and leadership.

“We intend to introduce chess to our members not only as a form of recreation but also as a tool to enhance analytical skills and leadership. Sports journalism requires precision, depth, and thoughtful analysis qualities chess naturally cultivates,” Kamara noted.

The SWAL president further stated that engaging members in the game will sharpen journalists’ abilities to cover sports with greater insight and clarity.
