China is set to construct a modern training facility for Liberia

MONROVIA – The Government of Liberia, through the Ministry of Youth and Sports, in partnership with the People’s Republic of China, has officially broken ground for the construction of a modern two-story training facility at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex.

The initiative forms part of the China-aided Liberia Bamboo and Rattan Weaving, Fruit and Vegetable Planting, and Livestock Raising Technical Assistance Project.

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, the project’s team leader, Mr. Chen Yu Qiong, said the facility will directly support training programs in bamboo and rattan weaving, fruit and vegetable planting, and biogas technology.

Mr. Qiong noted that once completed, the center will provide a greatly improved working and living environment for both trainees and staff.

He disclosed that his team has two and a half years remaining under the current project cycle, adding that construction would begin immediately and be completed within one year.

Emphasizing the broader vision of the partnership, he said the project aims to equip Liberian youth with practical skills and entrepreneurial opportunities, enhancing employability and promoting sustainable livelihoods.

He assured that China remains committed to working closely with Liberia in cultivating a new generation of skilled leaders to drive youth development and modernization.

In response, Youth and Sports Minister Cllr. Jeror Cole Bangalu expressed gratitude for China’s continued support, praising the quality of training already being delivered under the project.

According to him, the program is already transforming the lives of young Liberians, with 40 youths currently undergoing training in weaving, planting, and livestock rearing.

Minister Bangalu also revealed that he had shared program updates and photos with President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, who has shown a strong interest in youth empowerment.

He further announced plans to organise an interactive meeting between the trainees and trainers upon the President’s return from Japan.
